HUF does not reduce your family income. It splits it legally across two taxpayers.
First, What is an HUF?
Under the Indian Income Tax Act, 1961, an HUF (Hindu Undivided Family) is recognized as a completely distinct, independent legal entity. It is not an individual person, but a collective family body assessed under Section 2(31).
Your family collectively becomes a different taxpayer altogether in the eyes of the Income Tax Department.
The HUF possesses its own Permanent Account Number (the 4th letter is always 'H' for HUF).
HUF files its own annual Income Tax Return (ITR-2 or ITR-3) separate from your personal ITR.
Operates its own designated bank account with a separate basic tax exemption slab.
Who Can Form an HUF?
- ✓Eligible Communities: Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Buddhist families.
- ✓Husband & Wife Together: You do NOT need children to form an HUF. The moment you marry, an HUF automatically exists under Hindu Law.
- ✓No Ancestral Property Needed: You do NOT need grandfather property or inherited land. A simple initial gift corpus starts the entity.
- ✓Daughters are Equal Coparceners: Under the Hindu Succession Amendment Act, daughters enjoy identical coparcenary rights as sons.
Here is Why It is Powerful: The Dual Deduction Multiplier
Your HUF receives its own basic exemption slab and its own Section 80C deduction of ₹1.5 Lakh, completely separate from your individual deductions.
- • Basic Exemption: ₹2.5L (Old) / ₹3L (New)
- • Section 80C Limit: ₹1,50,000
- • Section 80D Health Insurance: Up to ₹25k - ₹50k
- • Personal Salary, Professional Fees, Individual Assets
- • Separate Basic Exemption: ₹2.5L (Old) / ₹3L (New)
- • Additional Section 80C Limit: ₹1,50,000
- • Additional Section 80D Medical Deduction
- • Rental, Business, Interest & Investment Capital Gains
Result: You effectively unlock two distinct sets of tax benefits and deductions for a single family.

Interest from FDs, dividends, and profits from shares/mutual funds held in the HUF's demat account.
Income from a proprietorship, trading firm, or partnership operated under the HUF name.
Gifts received by the HUF from non-members up to ₹50,000 per year, or gifts at marriage.
One Thing Most People Get Wrong About HUF
